Not to Forget the Good Times...

I feel like it is necessary for me to touch on this topic again...Last night I posted about "DD's breakaway disaster". Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers and suggestions. I wanted to be able to just share a few more things with you about Pete and DD so you can see why we are so torn with how he is acting. This has been a horse that I felt the "safest" with my daughter on. When we bought Pete he was for the Hubby. And he still is the Hubby's horse but D has spent a massive amount of time on this horse over the past few years. And not just rodeo'n, this is the horse she rides to run cattle, trail riding, even the horse that she rides doubles with her friends on. So to see this behavior come to a head like this is pretty upsetting! I am torn right now because she loves this horse, and has always felt confident on him until this past weekend...

So I want everyone to know that we are looking for her a new horse, she will be riding one Friday night. I also have a couple more that I have found and we are waiting to hear back. But for now I want to share some of their happiest times...

  1. I could be naive, but maybe he just doesn't want to rodeo anymore. I've heard of horses just quitting in the middle of what they're doing. Does he act up when they aren't there?

  2. Going off leah fry's comment above, my dad trained race horses. There was one horse that acted like a complete idiot in the starting gates. The owners finally retired him due to him flipping over all the time. They actually gave the horse to me. I never had a problem with him off the track.

I'm sure you'll find her an awesome rodeo horse. One that will love the competition.

  4. It is so neat to see all these pictures and see others who are avid about ranching as much as my family is! May God bless ya'll!

  5. Oh dear, this is so frustrating, isn't it? Especially when they've obviously had such good times together in the past. I feel your pain as I am quite baffled as to why my own horse is acting so strangely this winter. I'll be praying that the right one comes along.

  6. Give him a rest, and keep looking for the cause. A person's first horse is special (I know first hand). Pete looks like a keeper. Don't give up on him!

  7. It is so hard to tell why they do what they do an there can be so many valid reasons. But I think you are right to find her another horse for rodeo. He looks like a great horse and maybe he is just getting older and tired and wants to be just a pleasure horse:) I pray it all works out for y'all:)

  8. The pictures are wonderful...espcially the last one.

My friends horse was just points away from his all around championship..and he quit. He just in his own horse way..said he was done.

He was ready to never enter an arena again...

I know you will find her the perfect horse, she is a lucky young lady!

  9. DD and Pete are going to have many more pleasureable experiences together. He's obviously a good horse, he just can't handle all the pressure from that many events. It's very, very common.

Personally, I don't think there is anything 'wrong' with Pete physically. Very few horses can handle the mental pressure of 4 rodeo events. Those that can are usually horses that are built with a little more "whoa" than "go".

  10. Those are good memories and it's obvious Pete's been a great horse for your family, but it also looks like rodeo events are not his thing anymore, as seen from all the barrel events and roping event videos you've shared. He looks fed up and pissed and unwilling to cooperate at all. In that recent video, DD was kicking the crap out of him and he still wouldn't go. He even gave a warning rear, but he had already made his point. He's done.

I'm relieved that you all are realizing it's time to get DD another horse, before she gets seriously hurt. You'll always those memories to remember and Pete's probably not done. DD can probably still enjoy time together with him riding around the ranch and on relaxing trails. It's just that Pete seems to be telling everyone that he wants to retire from rodeo events now.

DD's such a great rider and deserves a willing, cooperative, horse for those rodeo events. A horse with the horse and mind for these rodeo events. Pete's already checked out.

  12. Quick questions: I noticed in all pictures of Pete he is wearing a tie-down. Does he have issues with flagging his head? Does he need to wear it even out on trail rides and such?

  14. This happens to some horses - our old mare was quite the gamer in her day and she got too hot! acting out going in the gate - done! We purchased her for trail riding and have never had a problem with her... Still love Pete - he just needs a change!!

Oh beautiful pictures by the way --

  15. Great comments, I agree with everyone else. Maybe it's Pete's time to just relax, trail ride, be a pleasure horse. He doesn't seem to be able to handle the pressure. I love the photos you shared. I hope you can find DD a good, safe rodeo horse! Take us shopping with you! ;)
